I received an Honourable Mention in the Amateur Wildlife category of the prestigious Monochrome Photography Awards of 2021 with three of my images: “Harmony”, “Protect Me” and “The Last Night of the Othawa King”.

A leopard, and a tree – a classic symbol of the relationship between flora and fauna. We are used to catching leopards hoisting a kill into a tree, or relaxing in one away from harm. Leopards need trees for survival. This image seems to tell a story of the appreciation that this leopard feels for the beautiful leadwood tree in her territory.

African Elephants – the endangered giants of Africa. After decades of poaching for the ivory they carry in their tusks, these magnificant creatures have officially been declared “Endangered” when it was added to the IUCN Red List in March of this year. The moment captured in this photo symbolises the vulnerability of these giants due to their valuable tusks.

King Nguvu. A beautiful lion, in his prime, showed us on this night that nature is cruel and overconfidence can be deadly out in the wild. We followed him for hours this particular evening as he responded to a roar from his neighbours’ territory. A territory where the infamous and deadly Birmingham coalition of two reigns. We left him as he moved further and further into enemy territory. Three days later his remains were found where we left him. Nobody will ever know what his final hours were like, or what drove him into their territory and ultimately to his death. But the last images of him will live forever as a reminder of his magnificence.
